Whilst the aquarium hobby in India can be traced back to the beginning of this century it was not until the 1930s that a few collectors started to export some of the more spectacular native species. Since then the Indian aquatic industry has grown and become an increasingly important source of ornamental fish for the aquatic hobby throughout the world. There are around 1,000 described species found in the Indian sub-continent and of these approximately 250 are now available to aquatic hobbyists.

The authors of this new book have been leaders in the Indian aquatic industry for many years and have devoted much of that time to cataloguing and photographing what they consider to be the "aquarium worthy species" which are found in the region. The results of their labours are set out in this book in which they identity and illustrate with colour photographs these species as well as providing information about their habits, requirements and suitability to the aquarist. The clear use of symbols associated with the photographs makes this a particularly useful work of reference.

In addition to a striking photo gallery and a description of fishes there is a substantial chapter devoted to the taxonomic description of these fishes and also the development of fishkeeping in India in the context of India's geography and population.

Not only will Ornamental Aquarium Fishes of India be an essential reference work for ichthyologists and fishkeepers, it is also a fascinating read for anyone interested in natural history or the natural world.
