The Fife is the smallest breed of canary and one of the youngest, being virtually unheard of thirty five years ago. It developed from the Border canary and is now one of the most popular varieties of canary, often taking Best Canary in Show awards.

Top breeder, exhibitor and judge Terry Kelly attributes their success to the following factors: Fifes are available in a variety of colours, the feather quality in the top exhibits is superb, they are good breeders (regardless of whether they are rearing young in the Mediterranean or the Highlands of Scotland) and Fifes are inexpensive to purchase and to keep.

Terry Kelly has kept birds since he was a schoolboy, back in 1959. Over the last twenty years he has bred over 3,000 Fife canaries which have gone to show homes worldwide. In the late 1980s he had probably the finest stud of Fife canaries in the world, winning all the major honours at the specialist Fife shows including the National Exhibition of Cage and Aviary Birds.
