T.F.H. Publications was started in 1947 by Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod. As a science faculty member of New York University, he was one of the first conservationists, warning students as well as the pet industry that it was necessary to protect the environment and to conserve our wildlife. Dr. Axelrod wrote and TFH published many of his books and books bv other authors, dealing with the proper selection, care and breeding of all kinds of pet and laboratory animals. Soon (1960) TFH became the largest and most successful publisher of pet and animal books in the world.

In 1990, Dr. Axelrod retired and in 1991 he started the Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod Foundation, a Non-profit Corporation. He dedicated the resources in this fund to buying land in Brazil (and, perhaps, other places) for conservation and study, prohibiting all kinds of exploitation of the living things, fossils and space on the land. The land, fossils and other specimens of natural history would be turned over to major institutions like the American Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Institution, the University of Guelph, as well as to Brazilian institutions of higher learning. The land and its contents would be solely for study and conservation.

In 1991, Dr. Axelrod bought a tract of land in a small mountain in Ceara, Brazil because he discovered it contained fossils, possibly including dinosaurs. His choice was successful and this fossil bed became the first land dedicated to conservation. In order to fund the protection and acquisition of lands, he decided to prepare this series of books the profits of which will go into the Foundation to further the causes of world-wide conservation and conservation education
