Myra Mahoney has been breeding and showing guinea pigs for over 30 years. In this book, she draws on her vast experience to introduce the newcomer to these attractive, good-natured rodents. She tells us about their origins, teaches us the basics of the guinea pig language, gives us tips on their general care and dietary needs and tells us how to look after them when they're ill. All the various colours and coat types are also described, and she explains in detail how to care for the flowing tresses of the long-hairs.

Myra is well-known in the British Cavy Fancy and is currently one of the Vice-Presidents of the Peruvian Cavy Club. Her passion is for long-haired cavies in their six different varieties. The first of these to appear was the Peruvian, and subsequently Myra was one of the first fanciers to show the Sheltie and then the Coronet. Since the advent of the Vexed' (curly) long-hairs, she has fallen for the Alpaca in a big way, and it now acounts for a quarter of her stock. She enjoys showing her longhairs, who often win Best In Show. She says that feeding, checking, grooming, bathing and mucking out 100 or more cavies is certainly a full-time occupation, not to mention keeping extensive records of births, 'marriages' and deaths. She also records where those who leave her go to, whether to pet homes or breeders. New owners are always given an information pack and urged to bring their guinea pigs back every six months for an MOT. All this, as well as keeping house for husband, Roger, and looking after two cats and a flock of white doves. No time for holidays - but who needs them?
